Preview: Football Attic Podcast 23

Greetings Podcast lovers and Attic dwellers!

Here's a quick message to let you know we're recording Podcast 23 in a couple of days' time, and this one has the simple working title of 'Best and Worst'.

Why? It's simple! During the course of the show, we're going to be throwing football nostalgia categories at each other (conversationally speaking) and discussing which are our favourite and least favourite things in those categories.

So for instance, you may hear Chris asking Rich for his best and worst items in the category of 'Football Kits'. Rich will obviously pick 'England '82' as his best and 'Coventry City 87' as his worst... Wait a minute... That can't be right... :-)

If all this still makes sense, we'd like to invite you to suggest some categories of your own. They can be as wide-ranging or as obscure as you like, as long as they have a football nostalgia element to them. (Don't make them too obscure, mind you - we're not that well-informed on Peruvian Second Division goalkeepers!)

Once you've done that, leave us a comment on the end of this post and we'll do our best to read out your suggestions during the recording. Simple!

Thanks very much as ever for your contributions. We look forward to hearing from you!

  1. Keep up the great work gentlemen.

Here's a few ideas to throw at you:

Some categories that come to mind are:

Best Commentators: My particular favourites (probably due to my age)are Brian Moore, David "One-Nil" Coleman, John Motson also would feature, to me he is the voice of the F.A.Cup Final, Huw Johns was also a favourite on the regional ITV coverage.

    F.A. Cup Finals

"The 5 minute" final of 1979 comes to mind as does one that would appeal to Rich the 1987 Coventry/Spurs game, the first one in 1990 Palace/Man United was an entertaining affair.
The worst I can remember are the 1985 Man Utd/Everton game and the 1996 Man Utd/Liverpool games.

    Radio Commentators

Peter Jones and Bryon Butler without doubt, they were fantastic, in the 70's and 80's the only Live midweek football action we would get would be on BBC Radio 2, it would be the second half only. We would however get a teaser at 8:02 P.M. in which the announcer would introduce the programme (for example if it was an England game) with something along the lines of " let's go over to Bryon Butler at Wembley and there's already been a goal" this would add to the excitement as we waited for Bryon or Peter Jones to break the news. Gillette Soccer Special isn't quite the same!
As mentioned in a previous podcast, to appreciate the genius that is Bryon Butler take a listen to his commentary of the Maradona wonder goal versus England in the 1986 World Cup Film "Hero"

    Worst Haircuts
My favourite is the ex Burnley and Spurs player Ralph Coates, he had the Bobby Charlton "combover"

    Worst Away Ends

Carrow Road, Norwich a massive 20 foot fence which meant viewing the goal nearest to you was impossible, honourable mentions to Upton Park,West Ham for the same reason.

Best Football TV Programme Theme tune
My favourites are two Big Match theme tunes "La Soiree" from 1974 to 1980 and the tremendous "Jubilation" by Jeff Wayne from 1980 to 1986.

    Best Matchball

Argentina "78" Adidas Tango- Superb, the bar at which all future World Cup balls have been set at and failed to match.
Does anyone remember an Orange version being used? did I dream it? or was it just that I had a Subbuteo version as a kid?..!

Another iconic ball is the Stuart Sturridge Football League ball which was used in the Football League Cup Final in the late Seventies and early Eighties, it was white with a red band, it rarely featured in league games but did so memorably when Justin Fashanu scored his Goal of the Season for Norwich v Liverpool in 1980.

I look forward to your "Bests and Worsts"

    Cheers
